Love Lane brewery tap have launched a crowd funding webpage to pay for a function room which can be used by social groups. Love Lane have been brewing experimental beers on their pilot kit such as a recent 8.3% beer. Cask beers normally just on at weekends/Fridays.

All over the country brewers have taking advantage of drinkers visiting them for takeaways to set up their own tap rooms and both Liverpool Brewing and Top Rope now open their breweries on certain weekends as taps (see their webpages for details). Top Rope moved to Bootle from Wales in 2020.

green hops pilgrimOver the summer Rock the Boat released another batch of their seasonal beer, Here Comes the Sun (lil’ darlin’), a 4.5% ABV Golden Ale, described as a three hop IPA, it contains New Zealand Rakau, Slovenian Celeia, and British Golding hops. It was seen in the Grapes, Roscoe Street, Cask, and, astonishingly, the Crow’s Nest in

Crosby. Dave Barker has again produced a beer for the new hop picking season.

Appropriately called Green Hop, it is brewed using is Pilgrim hops from Stocks Farm

Worcestershire. It is a 3.7% Golden Ale. Dave reports that he has not gained any new outlets for his beers recently, but that plenty have closed or are not taking many guest beers until trade improves.

Top Rope Brewery Logo 2B6B91539 6638 41C7 A9F6 AB9CF0004841I recently became the BLO for Top Rope Brewing in Bootle and looking on their website it reads “We are a Liverpool based microbrewery, who focus on creating modern, bold flavoured, vegan friendly beers in keg, cask and can.” So when I visited Top Rope and their idea of naming the beers with a wrestling theme, I thought I would be a smart Alec and ask where are the Les Kellett or Mick McManus beers? But of course they are not trying to attract an old fogey like me they want to appeal to young people into trying their beers, not lagers, beers, possibly a real beer for the first time and change them into future beer drinkers.

So let me begin with the man sitting in a pub (brewery tap). The names are novel and the variety is interesting although they do come at a cost. I am named in Latin as “Titus Arseus” so paying up to £4 for a 2/3rds of a pint hits hard. Furthermore my initial thoughts to tasting Papa Mango (5.1%) was why would you want to put fruit in beers? Surely the only fruit needed are hops? So with a little hesitation I tried this, tangy, refreshing, fruit bursting flavoured beer and boy did I like it. It slipped down a treat. Maybe it was the walk to the brewery along the canal on a lovely sunny late September afternoon that helped earn myself a thirst, but no.

Next up was the Canadian Destroyer a maple and pecan stout that is quite frankly, too die for. A full rich coffee flavoured stout that can be enjoyed as much by sipping and not just supping.Top Rope brewery And sipping it was because at 6.2% it has a kick and what an absolute lovely tasty, smooth, silky, enjoyable beer. In contrast I next tried a Flyin’ Brian Pilsner that is a clean, crisp, refreshing, flavoursome lager. Not bad at all and that is from an ale drinker.

I took away with me a couple of their canned beers Cold Stone Cream Austin and Shandy Savage and they did not disappoint. Whilst enjoying these I reflected on how it is exciting to see Neil and Ben’s enthusiasm and impressive energy. It is great that two young lads newish to the scene giving it a go in producing a range of their branded beers. Plus, and this is worth remembering is that they produce nearly 50% of their beers in casks. So I am on the lookout for Top Rope beers in the pubs to try out the cask version and I do not think I will be disappointed.

Cheers and good luck to all at Top Rope Brewing. I look forward to working with you.
