Top Rope Brewery Logo 2B6B91539 6638 41C7 A9F6 AB9CF0004841I recently became the BLO for Top Rope Brewing in Bootle and looking on their website it reads “We are a Liverpool based microbrewery, who focus on creating modern, bold flavoured, vegan friendly beers in keg, cask and can.” So when I visited Top Rope and their idea of naming the beers with a wrestling theme, I thought I would be a smart Alec and ask where are the Les Kellett or Mick McManus beers? But of course they are not trying to attract an old fogey like me they want to appeal to young people into trying their beers, not lagers, beers, possibly a real beer for the first time and change them into future beer drinkers.

So let me begin with the man sitting in a pub (brewery tap). The names are novel and the variety is interesting although they do come at a cost. I am named in Latin as “Titus Arseus” so paying up to £4 for a 2/3rds of a pint hits hard. Furthermore my initial thoughts to tasting Papa Mango (5.1%) was why would you want to put fruit in beers? Surely the only fruit needed are hops? So with a little hesitation I tried this, tangy, refreshing, fruit bursting flavoured beer and boy did I like it. It slipped down a treat. Maybe it was the walk to the brewery along the canal on a lovely sunny late September afternoon that helped earn myself a thirst, but no.

Next up was the Canadian Destroyer a maple and pecan stout that is quite frankly, too die for. A full rich coffee flavoured stout that can be enjoyed as much by sipping and not just supping.Top Rope brewery And sipping it was because at 6.2% it has a kick and what an absolute lovely tasty, smooth, silky, enjoyable beer. In contrast I next tried a Flyin’ Brian Pilsner that is a clean, crisp, refreshing, flavoursome lager. Not bad at all and that is from an ale drinker.

I took away with me a couple of their canned beers Cold Stone Cream Austin and Shandy Savage and they did not disappoint. Whilst enjoying these I reflected on how it is exciting to see Neil and Ben’s enthusiasm and impressive energy. It is great that two young lads newish to the scene giving it a go in producing a range of their branded beers. Plus, and this is worth remembering is that they produce nearly 50% of their beers in casks. So I am on the lookout for Top Rope beers in the pubs to try out the cask version and I do not think I will be disappointed.

Hot off the press: Top Rope are holding their 5th anniversary bash at the brewery on Saturday 6th November. They plan to launch a series of eight celebration beers available across keg and cask, these include a coffee and hazelnut beer called Da Maniac! Alongside a chocolate fudge birthday cake edition of their ice cream pale ale Cold stone Cream Austin. There will be exciting food options and even some live music in the evening!

They will be running the event over 2 sessions, an afternoon session from 12-4:30pm and an evening session from 5-10pm, the evening session will also feature some acoustic performances for your enjoyment. Tickets are £5 each and include your first drink when you arrive. They are available from:
