The Brooke Hotel

Written by Andre Fu

There have been changes at The Brooke Hotel. The pub now has a new leaseholder and is running it on behalf of Enterprise Inns and has plans to expand the range of real ales on offer. At present, there are currently 2 handpumps ( dispensing a beer from Robinson’s and one from Lancaster on a recent visit) but this is due to increase to 4 (maybe 5) by the August Bank Holiday, if not before. Beers will be selected from a quarterly list.  In addition, card carrying CAMRA members can now get a 10% discount on their real ale purchases (pints or halves) every day, all day. They are also considering offering a real cider which will be dispensed either from a bag-in-box from the fridge or through a handpull. There have been changes at The Brooke Hotel. There are plans to have a Beer & Gin Festival at some point in the summer followed by an Autumn Beer Festival. The new leaseowner has also assured me the pub will be active on social media too.

The Abbey

Written by Andre Fu

Abbey Hanover StThe Abbey has been selling some more interesting beers of late from breweries seldom seen in Liverpool.

On a recent visit, they had a beer from Bootleg Brewing Company of Chorlton and one from Box Steam Brewery of Trowbridge.

They continue to offer a 10% discount to CAMRA members on production of a valid card and a loyalty card scheme is in operation – buy 10 pints, get one free.

Other Pub News

Written by Andre Fu

After many years of not doing so, a city centre pub is now selling real ale once again. The Old Post Office off School Lane, near the Bluecoat, has re-activated the three handpulls. On a recent visit, Robinson’s Dizzy Blonde and Sharp’s Doom Bar were on offer.

Having recently reported that the Belvedere is no longer using lined (over-sized) glasses, we have now had some more positive news that The Corner Post in Crosby has started using them earlier this month.

The Old Blind School closed suddenly last week with a sign being placed in the window stating that they were ‘closed until further notice’. Since then, the owners (Carrwood), have stated that the venue had to close temporarily due to an equipment failure in the kitchen which meant that they were unable to serve food.

A spokesperson stated that the company was also taking the opportunity to refurbish the restaurant and hoped to reopen within four weeks.

Although outside our area, I think it is worth mentioning that The Cricketers Arms in St Helens has once again been named as Merseyside CAMRA Pub of the Year. They will now progress to the next round of the competition, the Regional POTY, and go up against the Cheshire POTY, which is the Tap & Bottle in Knutsford.

Cherry Rye

Written by Andre Fu

Cherry Rye 301x320Big Bog Brewery in Speke has re-brewed their Cherry Rye, as a seasonal beer, due to popular demand. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this beer, it is described as ‘ a light coloured ale, brewed with Rye malt for dryness and flavoured subtly with Montmorency cherries’. It should be available in pubs in the next couple of weeks.
