· The Guide announces eight new breweries in Merseyside & Cheshire
· The Cricketers in St Helens is named one of the UK’s Top 16 pubs according to CAMRA
As CAMRA unveils the 45th edition of the Good Beer Guide it congratulates the Roscoe Head in Liverpool for the outstanding achievement of being listed in every single Guide, demonstrating a consistent high standard of quality beer served in a fantastic setting.
The Roscoe Head joins just four other pubs from across the country to make the ranks of the “famous five”, which includes the Star Tavern and the Buckingham Arms in London, the Square & Compass in Dorset and the Queen’s Head in Cambridge. The Roscoe Head will be awarded for its achievement at an event open to the press on Tuesday 19 September at 4pm, which will be attended by Good Beer Guide Editor Roger Protz.
The Roscoe Head has been commemorated for serving a huge range of real ale and homemade food. The pub, which has been in the same family for over 30 years, was named after William Roscoe, a leading campaigner against the slave trade.
Roger Protz, who will be stepping down as Editor of the Good Beer Guide after 24 years says: “Huge congratulations are in order for the Roscoe Head, which has been listed in every single Good Beer Guide for the past 45 years. This is a great achievement which highlights the pub’s dedication to serving well-kept quality real ales over the decades.”

To be listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide is a high accolade for a pub. The Guide is based entirely on personal recommendations made by local CAMRA members, which are rigorously reviewed by branches and editors.
Recommendations take into account beer quality as well as the history and architecture of a pub and various aspects such as food, gardens, family and disabled facilities and special events. CAMRA does not take any fees for listings to ensure the guide remains independent and unbiased.

Carol Ross, Manager of the Roscoe Head said: “I’m incredibly proud that the Roscoe Head has been in every single edition, which is a testament to the old fashion high standards that we have held ourselves to over the years. The achievement is shared with my parents who ran the pub before me, who passed on their methods for taking care of quality real ale and maintaining a clean and well-cared for pub.”

CAMRA has also announced it’s Pub of the Year winner for Merseyside, the Cricketers in St Helens. The Cricketers is a friendly local community pub on the edge of the town centre which hosts darts and pool teams, entertainment at the weekend and has 13 handpumps at the bar.

The Cricketers, which is also listed in the Good Beer Guide, will now compete in the next round of the competition hoping to be named one of the four super-regional finalists to stay in with a chance of becoming the overall winner. The final announcement of the National Pub of the Year will take place in early 2018.

The Good Beer Guide app is now available to download from the App Store and Google Play. Users can search for a pub anywhere in the UK using data from over 40,000 pubs, 10,000 beers and 2,000 breweries and subscribe for 99p/month* to access even more features and enhanced search tools.
